150年前的1874年4月15日，一群巴黎的年轻人自己组织了一个画展，自称为“无名艺术家协会展览”，展出30名艺术家的165件作品。展期只有一个月，门票1法郎。展出之后，引发了颇大的反响，主要的声音都是批评。
4月25日，一位巴黎评论家Louis Leroy在杂志（Le CharivarI）上，针对莫奈的《印象-日出》发布了这段言论"Impression I was certain of it. I was just telling myself that, since I was impressed, there had to be some impression in it — and what freedom, what ease of workmanship! A preliminary drawing for a wallpaper pattern is more finished than this seascape."
“印象我很确定。我只是告诉自己，既然给我留下了深刻的印象，那就必须有一些印象——而且多么自由，多么容易制作！哪怕是一张壁纸的图案的都比这个绘画更加完整。”
