72 % of the Americans Are Illiterate

At least, there is one positive thing in the equation:

 in just 17 years, another 50 million Americans butted to those who can understand a story about science or technology, as political scientist Jon D. 

Miller at Michigan State University found in a recent research, presented last weekend in San Francisco at the annual meeting of the American Academy for the Advancement of Sciences

The increase in science literacy is due to colleges, most of them asking in recent years that students should take at least one science course.

Some people are self-taught, increasing their informal learning ability by reading and watching TV science reports.

But what about the 200 million Americans who cannot read a simple scientific story in

the pages of a magazine or comprehend the simplest ideas about DNA or microchips or global warming?

Such degree of science illiteracy is the explanation for over 40 % of Americans who reject evolution and about 20 % that believe that Sun orbits the Earth, 

like 400 years ago when people who dared not to believe so, like Galileo, were killed; 

or the disinterest of the public over issues like cancer study or pills that may extend life span by 30 or 40 %.

That's why Romania is a salad and Sweden = Switzerland.

"Ignorance reigns in our society at a moment when science is on the cusp of doing amazing and wonderful things, but also dangerous things. Ignorance is not an option," said Carl Sagan.

In a technological society based on science, there is the danger that a cadre of elites controls a mass dependent on technology but without having a clue.

This undermines democracy.

It turns that the illiterates become so afraid of science and technology, and so frustrated that they could intend to slow down or even stop the scientific-technological advance.

This happened many times in human history: the mob in ancient Alexandria chased out of the town the astronomer Aristarchus when he suggested that the Earth orbited the Sun, to the present concern on embryonic-stem-cell research.

The reverse happened in Mayan civilization, where the elite had high knowledge of mathematics, engineering, and astronomy use to control the masses through a bloody religion in which the heart of the agonizing victims was ripped out during the ceremonials.

During the colonial era, Europeans created global colonial empires due to their superior weaponry technology.

Surprisingly, the investigation revealed that Europeans and Japanese have a slightly lower science literacy than Americans but the same people believed more in evolution and other scientific theories.

This difference may be caused by the America's high level of religious bigotry.
