Dom Capers vs. Steelers’ O-lineBrett Favre called Dom Capers the MVP of the 2010 Packers. After dialing up a “Right Cat” coverage that put B.J. Raji in position for a pick-six in the conference championship, Capers can now be called a defensive mastermind.
Green Bay ranked second during the regular season in sacks (47.0) despite losing 10 players to injured reserve on that side of the ball. In three playoff games, the defense has tallied 10 sacks and 15 quarterback hits. Capers does an incredible job of disguising zone blitzes. Matt Forte of the Bears saw the pass-rushing schemes three times this year and is still confused.
“They do a lot of different blitzes. They put a lot of pressure on your protection,” he said this week. “You look at film and they blitz safeties, nickel guys, linebackers; they do cross-blitzes; they line up linebackers at defensive end and defensive ends at linebackers. It’s a lot to prepare for.”
If Doug Legursky replaces Maurkice Pouncey at center then it will be a big dropoff for the Steelers offensive line. The rookie is widely considered to be the team’s best O-lineman and the inside pressure of Raji and Ryan Pickett/Cullen Jenkins could be too much for Legursky and Co.
Packers’ run offense vs. Steelers’ run defense
In case you hadn’t heard, Green Bay has a running game that rolls around in a wheelchair. No team has ever won the Super Bowl ranking last in rushing and while the Packers weren’t quite that bad, they did finish the regular season ranked 24th at 100.4 yards a game.
James Starks had one breakout performance against a poor Eagles run defense but posted pedestrian numbers against the Falcons (66 yards) and Bears (74 yards). And Green Bay was even committed to killing the clock in the latter portion of those last two playoff games.
Pittsburgh’s run defense is the best in the land. The Steelers only allowed 62.8 rushing yards per game during the regular season - almost 30 yards better than the second-place team (Chicago, 90.1 ypg) - and gave up just five touchdowns on the ground. The three-yards-per-carry mark by opponents was also tops in the NFL.
Pittsburgh gave up 35 rushing yards on 18 attempts to the Ravens and 70 yards on 22 carries to New York. When the Steelers and Packers squared off in Week 15 of the 2009 season, Mike McCarthy only called nine run plays versus 48 pass plays. He may opt for a similar gameplan Sunday.
Packers' ideal conditions vs. Steelers’ ideal conditions
Temperatures in Arlington are expected to be in the high 50s for Super Sunday, but Jerry Jones will have his palace warm and cozy come kickoff.
The climate-controlled Cowboys Stadium certainly favors the Packers. Aaron Rodgers is a California-bred gunslinger and has stated many times he prefers playing in warm and precipitation-free weather. His receivers are aided by the sure footing of the indoor track compared to a sloppy outdoor field.
Over the last two years, Green Bay has played two postseason games in domes and it scored 48 and 45 points. Rodgers threw for 366 yards and three touchdowns against the Falcons and 423 yards and four scores versus Arizona.
Conversely, Pittsburgh is the epitome of an inclement-weather team. The Steelers would rather play in the open air on whatever they call that undergrowth at Heinz Field. Since 2008, they have played just two dome games. They struggled to beat Detroit last year and only put up 10 points in a defeat to New Orleans at the Superdome this season.
Rashard Mendenhall vs. Packers’ run defense
Super Bowl XLV has a great chance of playing out as a defensive battle and the Steelers have a great chance to win if they can control the clock by running the ball. They held onto the rock for 10 extra minutes during the win over the Jets by tipping the run-pass ratio to 43-19.
"When you're running the ball that good, you're managing the clock," LaMarr Woodley said. "When you manage the clock, usually your defense isn't out there and their defense is starting to get tired."
The primary weak spot in the Packers defense is against the run, specifically up the middle. Green Bay ranked 18th against the run this season (114.9 ypg) while Pittsburgh registered more than 120 yards a contest on the ground. Rashard Mendenhall has three rushing scores during the playoffs and is coming off a 121-yard performance in the AFC Championship.
