How to troubleshoot the white smoke problem of the 3126B diesel engine used in Carter excavators

 1. Cause of failure 

 (1) Poor fuel quality. 

 (2) The coolant temperature sensor or circuit is faulty. 

 (3) The fuel injector does not work. 

 (4) Poor combustion.  

(5) The intake air heater does not work. 

 (6) The coolant temperature sensor and intake air temperature sensor are not working properly. 

 (7) The air intake system is blocked.

 2. Check the coolant temperature circuit 

 (1) Connect ET to the automatic data transmitter connector. 

 (2) Check the fault code related to the coolant temperature circuit. 

 (3) Monitor the status of the coolant temperature sensor on the ET screen. If an open circuit or short

 circuit fault code is detected, please refer to Section 11.8 of this chapter.

 3. Check the fuel injector 

 (1) Ensure that the injector connector J300/P300 is connected correctly and is not corroded. 

 (2) Ensure that ECM connectors J1/P1 and J2/P2 are connected correctly and are not corroded. 

 (3) Conduct the injector solenoid coil test on the ET to determine whether all injector solenoid coils 

are 

powered by the ECM. 

 (4) Connect the ET to the automatic data transmitter connector and perform the cylinder failure test by 

selecting the diagnostic menu and diagnostic method menu. A cylinder cutout test can identify 

cylinders 

that are not firing. 

 (5) Check the injector of the cylinder that does not fire.

 4.Other troubleshooting 

 (1) Be aware of standard working conditions. Cold external conditions will affect the generation of 

white smoke. 

   (2) Check the fuel system.
