Honkong is gearing up for the annual Lunar New Year parade tomrrow night in Tsim Sha Tsui. As Danielle Tran reports, one artist will be putting a different twist on the traditional new year float.
Tomorrow's Lunar New Year parade is set to be a feast for the eyes. And if you're planning on joining in the festivities, they'll be one unique float that's bound to catch your eye.
Mainland artist Li Jianhang has been chosen to create one of the many new year floats that will be on display. But unlike his contemporaries, he doesn't ues a brush or paint.
Li creates his art using sand.
He says it's easy to use a brush or pen but it's different when working with sand. You have to accurately estimate how much sand you need to release from your hands and the direction and speed which you need to throw the sand on the board. Li's work will feature as part of the Hong Kong Jackey Club's new year float.
This is the first time his work has featured outside the mainland. Li graduates from art school in Beijing and is one of a handful of sand painters on the mainland. He was also one of the first sand painters to perform in front of Chinese leaders and foreign guests at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Li plans to create images of Victoria Harbour and equestrian events as part of his Lunar New Year message. Tomorrow's parade will provide Li with another opportunity to hone his craft and a chance for spectators to view up close this specialised art form.
