退翁按曰: 吾所著《扬州园林旧游记》，其中〈提要〉一篇，系由江都一中高级教师刘宏文先生撰并译，与所译《旧游记目录》，一并刊为卷首，便于中外读者开卷一览，即知梗概，起到导读的作用，其意良殷，或可代〈序〉，今刊帖于下，以补是书无序之憾也。

提   要

这本《扬州园林旧游记》的作者，是位用分类学的方法，系统研究扬州园林的学者。他的《扬州园林品赏录》蜚声海内外，一版再版。其实，《扬州园林旧游记》也是一部重要著作，其内容相当丰富，几乎涵盖了扬州历史、文化的多个方面。

作者还是位考古工作者，书中所谈论的风景名胜、历史遗迹、诗词、楹联、匾额、书画、壁画、石刻等，都与历史事件或历代的名人逸事相关联，或可能使读者获益一二。作者也是老一辈的博物学家，见过许多世面，因而他的游记涉及园林美学、风景学、建筑学、园林艺术、园林植物、地理景观、人文景观、植物景观、佛教文化、烹调艺术等诸多方面学科和知识面，将使读者的知识领域或有所扩大。

这部游记虽然写于三十年之前，但直到目前仍然具有一定的现实意义和导游作用。作者当年和他的同伴所走过的路线，已被热心读者和行家里手看作为最佳的黄金路线。这本《扬州园林旧游记》写得生动有趣，也可被看成是扬州旅游手册，值得一读。

Abstract

Prof. Zhu is the first scholar, who has done research on Yangzhou gardens systematically, comprehensively by the classified method. His works Appraisals of Yangzhou Gardens has enjoyed a high reputation at home and abroad. It has been published again and again. In fact, An Old Travels on Yangzhou Classical Gardens and Parks is a very important works, too. It has substantial content, which almost covers lots of ground in Yangzhou’s history and culture.

Prof. Zhu is an archaeologist. He is conversant with things past and present,erudite and informed. In his book, Prof. Zhu tells us about famous scenery, historical relics, old style poetry, literary couplet on pillars or walls，tablets，calligraphy and painting，murals, and stone carvings, which are all associated to the historic events or a galaxy of celebrities through the ages. We think that readers can acquire much benefit from this book. At the same time, Prof. Zhu is a naturalist of the old generation. He has seen a great deal of the world, and therefore, his travels can deal with a wide range of knowledge and disciplines, In which there is Garden aesthetics, Scenic logy, Architecture, Garden art, Landscape Plant, Geographical landscape, Human landscape, Plants landscape, Buddhist culture, Culinary art and so on. It is sure that w e can enlarge our views by reading this book.

Though it was written thirty years ago, there is still practical significance up to now. The route that the author and his partners walked before has been regarded as the best, golden route by tourists and experts. Prof. Zhu’s series of travel notes is very lively and interesting. It can also be regarded as the handbook for Yangzhou. It is well worth reading.

退翁跋曰:凡五架书屋自印书，其书名、提要、目录，皆中文与英文对照。因退翁所著，不仅为国内读者服务，并要为外国读者服务，使其从提要与目录，知我所著大概，因而起到导读作用，俾便兼收中外文化交流之益，岂不更好？故吾择焉！
